Sravana Masam - 2013

Sravanam, or Sravana Masam (August - September) is the fifth month in the traditional Hindu calendar followed in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Sravana Masam is considered an auspicious month and numerous rituals are held in the month. For some communities Sravana Masam is dedicated to Lord Vishnu; for some it is dedicated to Lord Shiva. 

In 2013 year, Sravana Masam begins on August 7 and ends on September 5.
  • Mondays of Sravana Masam is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
  • Mangala Gowri Vrata is observed on Tuesdays in the month of Sravana by women.Fridays in Shravana sukravaram is dedicated to Goddess Lakshimi.
  • Saturdays are dedicated to Lord Shani and Lord Balaji.
  • The birthday of Lord Krishna is observed in the month and therefore many people consider the month highly auspicious and perform numerous functions like Grihpravesh etc.
  • Shravan Poornima is observed as Raksha Bandhan.

Sravanam Maasam begins on Wednesday,

Naga Panchami

This festival is being celebrated mostly in Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh. On this day, devotees pour milk, chimili (a mixture of milk, black grams, sugar or jaggery) and pour the same along with flowers in a putta (a place where snakes lives). They offer prayers to Nagaraja and seek blessings for alround health, wealth and happiness. Naga Panchami for the year 2013 falls on August 11th 2013.
Mangala Gowri Vratam

Ancient texts say that Lord Parameswara won over Tripurasuras taking the help of Goddess Mangala Gowri. This vrata can be performed during Tuesday in Sravanamasam. The married couple have to perform this vrata from the first year to five years regularly. Texts says that by performing this vrata, the natives will be blessed with Sowbhagya vruddi and children. On this day, after completion of vrata, the performers have to give grams, fruits along with Tambulam to five married women. Mangala Gowri Vratam for the year 2013 falls on August 13, 20, 27 and 3rd September 2013.

Vara Lakshmi Vratam

This comes in Sravana Sukravaram. It is performed by the married ladies. Varalakshmi Puja or Varalakshmi Vratha is an important ritual observed by married women in South India and Maharashtra for the prosperity and welfare of their families. Varalakshmi Puja falls on a Friday in the month of August and the preparations for the puja begin on Thursday. All the necessary items needed for the pooja are collected by Thursday evening on puja will be on Friday. The date of Varalakshmi Vratam in 2013 is August 16.
Raksha Bandan (Sravana Poornima)

The festival is marked by the tying of a rakhi, or holy thread by the sister on the wrist of her brother. The elder brother in return offers a gift to his sister and vows to look after her same while an elder sister returns offers to her younger brother. The brother and sister traditionally feed each other sweets. It is not necessary that the rakhi can be given only to a brother by birth; any male can be "adopted" as a brother by tying a rakhi on the person, that is "blood brothers and sisters", whether they are cousins or a good friend. Indian history is replete with women asking for protection, through rakhi, from men who were neither their brothers, nor Hindus themselves. Raksha Bandan for the year 2013 falls on August 21, 2013.

Krishna Asthami / Sri Krishna Janmashtami

Lord Sri Krishna came to earth on this day. Ancient texts a lot about the incarnation of Lord Mahavishnu in the form of Lord Sri Krishna. This vrata can be performed with the help of a priest. On this day, the native should observe fasting and should wake up through out the night. Recite Bhagavatam or Bhagavadgita on the night. On the next day, the native has to perform puja Lord Krishna and offer annadanam. Krishnastami is also called as Mohaaratri. From this day onwards, By performing saptasati Stotra parayana and Chandi homam, the native will get victory over enemies. Srikrishnastami for the year 2013 falls on August 28, 2013.
